Study dentistry (BDS) in Italy - an English-taught dental degree, via the IMAT
English-taught, 6-year Dentistry & Dental Prosthodontics at Italian public universities - Sapienza (Rome) and Siena - admitted through the national IMAT. Genuine EU degrees at income-based, affordable tuition, though seats are very limited and highly competitive, with an honest, verified route back to practising in India.
Why Indian students choose Italy
Italy offers the widest choice of affordable, English-taught, EU-recognised medical schools anywhere in Europe - which is exactly why it's our most popular destination.
Genuine EU qualification
A European dental degree recognised across the EU, opening careers beyond Italy.
Income-based, affordable
Public tuition scales to family income (~โฌ1,000-4,000/yr) - often less than an Indian private BDS.
English coursework
Taught in English; Italian for clinical/chairside work, with language courses provided.
Merit-only IMAT entry
One transparent English exam; seats by ranking - but very few dental places.
Global mobility
An EU dental degree is a platform for registration routes in the EU, UK and beyond.
Verified India pathway
We map DCI/NDC recognition and the screening exam in writing before you enrol.
What makes Italy different
Every country has its own character. Here's what genuinely distinguishes Italy from the other EU & Schengen options.
A real EU dental degree - but scarce
Italy's English Dentistry & Prosthodontics is a genuine EU qualification, but only Sapienza and Siena offer it, with very few non-EU seats.
Very limitedGenuinely affordable
Public tuition is income-based (~โฌ1,000-4,000/year) - Italian dentistry can cost less than an Indian private BDS.
Low costMerit-only via IMAT
One transparent English national exam; seats by ranking, no donations - but expect stiff competition for the few dental places.
Merit-basedEnglish, with Italian clinics
Coursework is in English; Italian is used for chairside patient work, with language courses provided.
English-taughtHonest about the India route
We explain DCI/NDC recognition and the screening/exit exam plainly, and verify the programme before you commit.
No overpromisingMedical universities in Italy
Below is the full list of universities in Italy offering English-taught medicine to international students - public and private. Tuition figures are indicative and confirmed per university each admission cycle.
Sapienza University of Rome
Launched an entirely English 6-year Dentistry & Dental Prosthodontics degree in 2022; a handful of non-EU seats (โ13 in 2025), very competitive on IMAT ranking.
University of Siena
Italy's longest-running English Dentistry programme, but with a tiny non-EU quota (as few as 2 seats in 2025) - extremely competitive.
๐ถ Most Italian public universities set tuition by ISEE - Italy's official family-income assessment - so there's no single sticker price: it's typically ~โฌ400-โฌ4,500/year for non-EU students, confirmed once you submit income documents. A few (e.g. Sapienza) instead charge a flat non-EU fee. As always, before any commitment we provide a written check that the university and programme satisfy India's NMC FMGL rules.
Fees & living costs
A realistic, indicative breakdown of what a dental degree in Italy costs an Indian student - tuition, living and the all-in picture.
Tuition
Income-based (ISEE) at public universities; non-EU pay a fixed contribution by home country.
Total 6-year tuition
Dentistry in Italy is a 6-year single-cycle degree.
Living costs
Higher in Rome; income-based tuition keeps the overall cost low.
Non-EU seats
Per university, per year - Italy's English dentistry is tiny and highly competitive.
In Italy, public-university tuition is income-based (ISEE) and genuinely affordable - often a fraction of an Indian private seat. All figures are indicative for planning and confirmed per university each cycle.

Indicative only - excludes one-time setup, flights & personal spending.
Admission requirements & process
Everything an Indian student needs to apply to Italy - requirements, documents and the step-by-step process, in one place.
Strong academic record
Class 12 (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry & Biology. Selection is by your IMAT score; non-EU dental seats are very limited. This is a serious, rigorous EU dental degree - not an easy back-door.
NEET qualification
You must have qualified NEET-UG. While Italy's universities select on their own entrance exam, India's rules require NEET for you to be eligible to practise dentistry in India after graduating - so we treat it as essential.
Age
You should be at least 17 years old by 31 December of the year of admission. There is no strict upper age limit at most universities, though earlier is better.
English proficiency
The degree is taught in English, with Italian used for clinical/chairside work with local patients (you take Italian language courses). No IELTS is needed - the IMAT is in English.
Selection & entrance exam
Admission is by the IMAT (the same English national exam as Medicine), with seats allocated by ranking. Be aware: non-EU dental seats are very few - often only a handful per university - so entry is highly competitive. We confirm each university's exact method before you apply.
Medical fitness
A basic medical fitness certificate (including standard tests such as HIV) is typically required to confirm you're fit to begin the programme.
Financial proof
For the student visa you'll usually need proof of funds - typically a bank statement and a sponsorship affidavit showing you can cover tuition and living costs.
When to start your Italy application
Applications open long before classes begin. Here's the timeline counting back from the September-October intake - so you know exactly when to start.
- 12-18 months before
Start in Class 12: apply, then confirm on results
You can begin while still studying Class 12. Finish your boards with Physics, Chemistry & Biology and clear NEET-UG (required for India). Many universities accept an early application on your Class 11 / predicted marks and issue a conditional offer - your seat is confirmed once your Class 12 and NEET results are out.
- 9-12 months before
Shortlist & verify universities
We match you to English-medium universities that fit your budget and profile, with a written check on recognition and your India pathway. Begin collecting and attesting your documents.
- 6-9 months before
Apply & prepare the entrance exam
Submit your applications. Most dental faculties select by a Biology/Chemistry entrance exam - register early and prepare, as exam dates are fixed.
- 4-6 months before
Get your Letter of Acceptance
Once selected, pay the first-year tuition and receive your official Letter of Acceptance from the university.
- 2-3 months before
Apply for your student visa
Lodge your long-stay study visa with proof of funds. This can take several weeks, so don't leave it late.
- 1 month before
Travel & accommodation
Book flights and student housing, arrange insurance, and complete your pre-departure checklist.
- Intake - Sept/Oct
Enrol & begin your 6-year degree
Register at the university, obtain your residence permit, and start your journey to becoming a dentist.
This is a typical timeline for the autumn (September-October) intake - the key takeaway is to start about a year ahead. Exact dates depend on the university and any entrance exam, which we confirm with a dated plan for your shortlist.
DCI / NDC recognition for Italy
India regulates dentistry through the **National Dental Commission (NDC Act, 2023)**, which is replacing the Dental Council of India (DCI). To practise in India with a foreign dental degree you must meet its conditions - and, importantly, foreign dental qualifications are scrutinised more strictly than medical ones, so each university must be verified individually before you enrol.
NEET qualified first - clear NEET-UG before enrolling abroad to stay eligible to practise dentistry in India.
A recognised dental qualification - the degree must be recognised for enrolment as a dentist in the country of study (Italy / the EU).
English-medium throughout - the full DMD programme is taught in English, as required.
Pass the screening / exit exam - currently the DCI Screening Test, transitioning to the National Exit Test (Dental) under the NDC Act, 2023.
Register with a State Dental Council - the final step to practise in India once you've cleared the exam.
Verified per university, in writing - because foreign dental degrees face closer scrutiny, we confirm each programme's standing before you commit.
Quality of medical education in Italy
Medicine in Italy is a rigorous, EU-standard degree - not a shortcut. Here's what underpins its quality.
EU-standard training
A 6-year single-cycle Dentistry & Prosthodontics degree built to European standards.
Historic universities
Sapienza and Siena are among Italy's oldest and most respected universities.
Hands-on clinical training
Chairside practice in Italian teaching clinics through the later years.
Modern facilities
Well-equipped teaching clinics, simulation labs and phantom-head units.
Experienced faculty
Taught by practising clinicians and researchers in English.
Small, selective cohorts
Tiny English dental intakes mean small, focused classes.
Career & employment opportunities
A dental degree from Italy opens doors in India and across the world. Your path depends on where you choose to practise.
Practise in India
Return via the DCI screening / NExT (Dental) route, then register with a State Dental Council.
Dentistry in the EU
Pursue registration and practice across EU/EEA countries, subject to local rules and language.
UK & international
Sit the relevant overseas registration exams for the UK and other countries.
Specialise (MDS)
Progress to postgraduate specialisation and clinical training after your degree.
One dental degree, many directions
The bars show the breadth of paths a recognised EU dental degree keeps open - not guaranteed outcomes. Practising anywhere depends on clearing that country's registration route. We help you plan the one that fits your goals.
An honest word on outcomes: a dental degree opens the door, but practising in India requires a recognised qualification and clearing the DCI screening / NExT (Dental) - and India scrutinises foreign dental degrees closely. We help you choose carefully and prepare well, but we never promise guaranteed registration, jobs or exam passes.
Postgraduate options after dentistry in Italy
Your dental degree from Italy is the foundation for specialising. After you register as a dentist, these are the realistic postgraduate routes - honestly ranked by how most Indian students actually proceed.
PG in India (NEET-MDS)
The most common route. After clearing the DCI screening / NExT (Dental) and registering, you sit NEET-MDS to enter a 3-year MDS specialisation in India.
Specialist training in Italy / the EU
As an EU-recognised graduate you can apply for residency in Italy or elsewhere in the EU - but be realistic: it's competitive, usually conducted in the national language, and EU citizens often have priority.
UK - royal college route
Sit the UK dental faculty exams (e.g. MFDS) and pursue further training or specialisation in the UK.
US - residency (USMLE)
Pursue US advanced dental education by sitting the required US board exams and applying to accredited programmes.
Reality check: outside the UK/US exam routes, specialist training in Europe is usually in the local language and prioritises EU citizens - so for most students, PG back in India via NEET-MDS is the main plan. We map the realistic route for you, without overpromising.
Popular student cities
Each city offers a different balance of cost, scale and lifestyle - we'll help you choose the one that fits you.
Rome
The Eternal City - home to Sapienza and endless history.Siena

It can be - but only if the qualification is recognised and you clear India's screening/exit exam (currently the DCI Screening Test, moving to the National Exit Test (Dental) under the NDC Act, 2023) and register with a State Dental Council. India scrutinises foreign dental degrees closely, so we verify the programme's standing in writing before you enrol.
Public-university tuition is income-based (ISEE), roughly โฌ1,000-โฌ4,000/year - Italian dentistry is genuinely affordable, often less than an Indian private BDS. Over the 6-year degree that's about โฌ6,000-โฌ24,000, plus living costs of ~โฌ600-โฌ1,000/month. The catch isn't cost - it's the very small number of non-EU seats.
Honestly, very hard. Only Sapienza (Rome) and Siena offer English Dentistry, and non-EU seats number in the low single digits to low teens per year, allocated by IMAT ranking. It's one of the most competitive dental routes in Europe - we'll tell you plainly whether it's realistic for your profile.
Yes, if you intend to practise in India. India's rules require NEET-UG before you enrol in a foreign dental programme to remain eligible later - even though Italian admission is by the IMAT, not NEET.
Coursework is in English; Italian is used for clinical/chairside work with local patients, with Italian language courses provided. The IMAT entrance exam is in English, so no IELTS is needed.
Italy works differently from merit-based countries. Entry is through the IMAT exam, held around mid-September, and you sit it in your final year of school - most students prepare for it right through Class 12. But you must hold your completed Class 12 diploma before the pre-enrolment deadline (around September-October), so in the normal Indian timeline you finish your boards in spring, sit the IMAT that September, and enrol in October the same year. Two limits to know: you can only sit the IMAT in your final year (a score from earlier, e.g. Class 11, isn't valid), and an IMAT result counts only for that year's admission cycle. You must also have qualified NEET-UG to be eligible to practise in India later.
Yes. The most common route for Indian students is to return and sit NEET-MDS for an MDS specialisation in India (after FMGE/NExT and NMC/DCI registration). You can also pursue specialist training in Italy or the EU - though outside English-speaking systems this is usually in the local language and competitive for non-EU graduates - or take the UK royal-college or US USMLE routes. We help you plan a realistic PG pathway, honestly.
Italy is the genuine exception where funding actually helps. Public-university tuition is **income-based (ISEE)**, so lower-income students pay very little - sometimes only a few hundred euros a year. On top of that, Italian regions offer **right-to-study scholarships (DSU / borse di studio)** to international students, assessed on income and merit, that can cover fees and add a maintenance grant; a few universities (e.g. Sapienza) also run their own scholarships. It's competitive and income-assessed - we help you apply. No false promises, but Italy offers more real support than anywhere else in our line.
