The Truth About Scholarships for MBBS & BDS in Europe

Med Europe Team16 Jun 20267 min read

Most European medical degrees are self-funded. Here is what is real - Stipendium Hungaricum, Italy's income-based fees - and why many 'government scholarship' claims are a myth.

'Full scholarship available!' is the biggest lie in the MBBS-abroad world. So let us be honest with you. For most European medical and dental degrees, non-EU students like you pay for it themselves, usually with an education loan. That is the plain truth.

But there are a few real exceptions worth knowing - and a few myths worth ignoring. Here is the honest map.

The one big, real scholarship: Stipendium Hungaricum

Hungary runs a genuine government scholarship called Stipendium Hungaricum. India is an official partner country, and it covers the one-tier Medicine and Dentistry degrees with full tuition, accommodation help and a monthly stipend.

The catch: it is competitive and has limited seats, and you apply through a government process. Not everyone gets it. But it is real - and if Hungary interests you, it is worth a serious try. See our MBBS in Hungary and BDS in Hungary pages.

Italy: the system itself helps

Italy is the friendliest country for money, but not through a classic 'scholarship'. Instead, public tuition is income-based - lower-income families simply pay less, sometimes only a few hundred euros. On top of that, Italian regions offer right-to-study grants (called DSU) to international students based on income and merit, which can cover fees and add a living grant.

So Italy offers more real support than most. Read the details on our MBBS in Italy page.

Small discounts at a few universities

A handful of universities give partial, merit-based fee discounts to strong students - for example RSU in Latvia and the University of Tartu in Estonia. These are small and usually reward good performance, not something you can count on before you enrol.

The myths to ignore

Two big ones. First, the famous Romanian Government scholarship excludes Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy - so a 'Romania scholarship for MBBS' does not exist, no matter what an agent says. You can read the honest funding note on our MBBS in Romania page.

Second, some universities plainly offer nothing - LSMU in Lithuania, for instance, states that all English-taught study is self-funded. That is not a bad thing; it is just honest, and it is better to know before you apply.

How to actually fund your degree

For most families, the realistic plan is an education loan from an Indian bank, sometimes with a small merit discount or an Italian income-based fee to soften it. That is normal, and it is nothing to be ashamed of.

We will tell you exactly what funding is realistic for your chosen country, help you apply where a genuine scholarship exists, and plan the loan route otherwise. No false promises - ask us and we will be straight with you.

Frequently asked questions

Are there full scholarships for MBBS in Europe for Indian students?+

Genuine full scholarships are rare. The main real one is Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum, which covers Medicine and Dentistry with tuition, accommodation and a stipend - but it is competitive and limited. Most students self-fund with an education loan.

Is there a Romanian government scholarship for MBBS?+

No. The Romanian Government scholarship is real, but it explicitly excludes Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. Any agent promising a Romania scholarship for MBBS is misleading you. Romanian MBBS is effectively self-funded.

Which country gives the most financial help?+

Italy. Its public tuition is income-based, so lower-income families pay very little, and Italian regions offer right-to-study grants to international students. Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum is the strongest classic scholarship, but it is competitive.

How do most students pay for MBBS or BDS in Europe?+

With an Indian education loan, sometimes combined with a small merit discount or Italy's income-based fees. We help you plan the funding honestly and apply for any genuine scholarship you qualify for.
